Archives of Others' Lists, Part 2: Juan-Carlos

I have made a lot of lists on this blog, but in the words of Confucius I am not an originator but a transmitter. All my lists are nothing more than a compilation of interesting stuff I've found by perusing other lists on various forums and sites. When lists are of particular value to me, I tend to save them on a document, and I'd like to share them here as an extension of my archive, since the originals of these lists are long, long gone at this point. Most of the originals had great images along with them, but oh well. Sacrifices will have to be made. Unless stated otherwise, the lists are one-film-per-director, as was tradition.

I had these up on ICheckMovies but I kinda hate that site.

The primary place I have lists from is two forums, YMDb and its re-incarnation The Life Cinematic. I browsed from 2008 onward and posted between 2010 and 2013 when the forum finally died.

The next user I want to highlight is Juan-Carlos (he changed his username so many times that I can't remember them all). Juan-Carlos was Cuban-American and retained a lot of sympathies for extreme leftist thought. I doubted a lot of his sincerity because it was clear he liked to be provocative and troll. But there are a lot of films on here that engage in some way with thought inspired by Marx and similar thinkers, either in direct or indirect ways. Juan-Carlos was a leftist with real balls, deeply opposed to political correctness and performative, bougie ideology, which I have a real respect for. Of course, that is just one theme to pick up on out of this list. While Juan-Carlos had a history of being transgressive and provocative, his lists do have maturity and refinement. He was someone who loved anything with power and weight. I still remember one of the best quotes he had against John Ford hataz: "too many people confuse classicism with lack of style." Oh so true.

I met Juan-Carlos and his then-girlfriend once in New York City during a Dario Argento retrospective. He was the only member of the forum I had the pleasure to. Eventually our hobbies veered in pretty different directions but I will always hold that meeting dear.

List 1: Juan-Carlos's 20 Favorite Films

This is an incredibly old list. The earliest incarnation of YMDb which I didn't get to see had lists limited to 20 choices, and that is probably where the one-per-director tradition originated from. As early as this list is, it is remarkably consistent with his later choices.

1. Pickpocket (Robert Bresson, 1959)

2. 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her (Jean-Luc Godard, 1967)

List 2: Juan-Carlos's 100 Favorite Films, Ver. 1

This is a rare example of a list that is not one-per-director. From what I remember, this list, while sincere, was somewhat purposely created to balance the complacency for "niceness" and "good taste" of the site, so he purposely tried to go overboard on stuff with weird, transgressive content (see all the Jesús Franco choices, lol). And it's all the better for it!

List 7: Juan-Carlos's 50 Favorite Albums

Juan-Carlos was also a big influence to me in the field of music. Of course, I didn't know who Piero Scaruffi was back then so I didn't realize the derivative nature of a lot of his list, lol. Still, I think this is a solid selection of stuff.

1. Trout Mask Replica (1969) by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

2. Rock Bottom (1974) by Robert Wyatt

3. From Her to Eternity (1984) by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

4. Before and After Science (1977) by Brian Eno

5. Absolutely Free (1967) by The Mothers of Invention
